Understanding whether you need a visa before boarding your flight from Istanbul (IST) or Ankara (ESB) is the most critical step of your journey. In 2026, Vietnam has expanded its visa-free policies to encourage tourism, but the rules vary significantly based on your nationality.
Under the guidance of Stanley Ho, CEO of Visaonlinevietnam (Transocean), we provide the most updated list of countries that do not require a visa and the specific conditions for Turkish passport holders.
Table of Contents
1. Do Turkish Citizens Have Visa Exemption?
As of April 2026, Turkish citizens do not have a general visa exemption for Vietnam.
-
Requirement: Turkish passport holders must obtain an E-visa or an Approval Letter before arriving at Vietnam’s borders.
-
Diplomatic Passports: Holders of Turkish Diplomatic and Service passports may be eligible for visa-free entry for up to 90 days (please verify with our consular desk for current bilateral updates).
-
Ordinary Passports: An E-visa is mandatory for all tourism and business purposes.
2. The 2026 Global Visa-Free List (45-Day Stay)
Vietnam currently grants a unilateral 45-day visa exemption to citizens of the following countries (regardless of passport type):
| Region | Countries |
| Europe | Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Russia, Belarus, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic. |
| Asia | Japan, South Korea. |
Important Rules for Visa-Free Entry:
-
Stay Duration: Exactly 45 days. If you stay until Day 46, you face heavy overstay fines.
-
Passport Validity: Must be at least 6 months.
-
Return Ticket: You must show proof of onward travel to the airline agent in Turkey.
3. ASEAN Visa-Free Entry (14 – 30 Days)
If you are an expat living in Turkey with a passport from an ASEAN nation, you enjoy the following exemptions:
-
30 Days: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos.
-
21 Days: Philippines.
-
14 Days: Brunei, Myanmar.
4. Phu Quoc Island Special Exemption
All nationalities (including Turkish citizens) are eligible for a 30-day visa exemption if they fly directly to Phu Quoc Island (PQC) and do not leave the island for the mainland.
-
Note: Most flights from Turkey transit through Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN). If you transit through these hubs, the Phu Quoc exemption does not apply, and you will need a visa.
5. Emergency Support: “Exemption Denied” at the Gate
A common 2026 crisis occurs when a traveler assumes they are visa-exempt but is denied boarding at Istanbul Airport because their country is not on the list or their stay is longer than 45 days.

6. Expert Advice by Stanley Ho
“The ’45-day’ rule is a trap for many travelers,” says Stanley Ho. “People often count 45 nights, but Vietnam counts by calendar days, including the day you land. If you are a Turkish citizen, don’t rely on exemptions—secure your 90-day E-visa early to avoid being stopped at the Istanbul gate.”
